The BSTY halving.
Every 240,000 blocks, the reward for mining a new BSTY block is cut in half. No vote, no announcement, no one pressing a button — it's written into the code, just like Bitcoin.
What is the halving?
New BSTY enters circulation only as a reward to the miner who finds each block. The halving is the moment that reward drops by 50%. Right now miners earn 12.5 BSTY per block; at block 720,001 it becomes 6.25 BSTY.
With a block roughly every 10 minutes, 240,000 blocks takes about four and a half years. Over time the reward shrinks toward zero, so the total supply can never pass about 30 million BSTY.

Reward drops 12.5 → 6.25 BSTY

Estimate assumes 10-minute blocks; the real date shifts with mining speed.
Reward schedule
| Era | Blocks | Reward (BSTY) | Years |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 – 17,290 | 347 | 2014 |
| 2 | 17,291 – 240,000 | 50 | 2014–2019 |
| 3 | 240,001 – 480,000 | 25 | 2019–2024 |
| 4 | 480,001 – 720,000 | 12.5 | 2024–2028 (now) |
| 5 | 720,001 – 960,000 | 6.25 | ~2028–2033 |
| 6+ | every 240,000 blocks | halves again | → ~2050 |
Dates are estimates based on 10-minute blocks. See coinomics and history for more.
Why halve at all?
Paper money can be printed without limit. BSTY does the opposite: it starts generous to reward early miners, then gets scarcer on a schedule anyone can check. That predictability is what makes it a candidate store of value — nobody can decide to create more.
What it means for miners
- Half the coins per block. The same hashrate earns half as much BSTY overnight.
- Costs matter more. Electricity and hardware efficiency decide who stays profitable. Check WhatToMine before and after.
- Difficulty adjusts. If some miners leave, difficulty falls so blocks keep coming about every 10 minutes, and remaining miners get a bigger share.
- Any PC still works. Yescrypt keeps mining open to ordinary computers — no costly machines needed. Start with the mining guide.
- Fees grow in importance. As rewards shrink, transaction fees become a larger part of what keeps miners securing the chain.
What it means for holders
Your coins don't change — you keep exactly what you have. What changes is how fast new BSTY appears. A halving doesn't guarantee any price move; markets are unpredictable and past halvings are not a promise. Read things you need to know.
What it means for the network
Nothing stops. Blocks keep arriving, transactions keep confirming, and nodes enforce the new reward automatically. Anyone running a full node helps check that every miner follows the rule.
Common myths
- "My coins get cut in half."
- No. Only the new-block reward halves. Balances are untouched.
- "Someone decides when it happens."
- No. It triggers at a fixed block height, enforced by every node.
- "The price always goes up afterwards."
- Not guaranteed. Supply is only one side of the market.
- "Mining ends at the halving."
- No. Mining continues; rewards simply shrink, with fees taking a bigger role.
